I just slit the grass to a spade's depth, wiggled the spade around a bit, then slid the bulbs in while the spade was still in position, before closing the little trench as I withdrew the spade. It made very little impact on the grass, but got the bulbs down to the depth they needed. Good luck! They're worth it!
